Inside the Old Broadway Theatre

the broadway

Two years ago, Barnacle Studios was established with a vision—to create a vibrant cultural hub and performing arts space on the Mornington Peninsula. Now, with the restoration of The Broadway, that vision is coming to life. Addressing a long-standing community need, this project will transform a historically significant venue into a thriving space for creativity, expression, and social connection.

Originally opened in December 1928 as a Silent Picture Theatre, The Broadway quickly became a cornerstone of Rosebud's cultural life. Designed by the esteemed architectural firm H. Vivian Taylor and Soilleux, renowned for their expertise in theatre acoustics and design, the theatre was a beacon for cinema screenings and community dances. Purchased by the Whitaker family in 1930, it remained an enduring symbol of Rosebud's rich artistic heritage.
In the 1950s, it became a dance Palais, then in the 70S the Broadway ceased operating, and has been used for a range of different commercial activities until now.

Now, under the stewardship of Barnacle Studios, The Broadway will undergo an 18-month revitalisation, restoring its legacy while introducing new opportunities for local artists and the wider community.

The Broadway Revitalisation Project is proudly supported by our Founding Partners The Mornington Peninsula Shire.
